The vacuum will also notify you if there are areas you need to tackle yourself. One thing to factor into your scheduling is that when it’s on boost mode, it requires regular recharging, so although it’s a very quick vacuum, if you want it to tackle a bigger room, it's worth allowing enough time for a recharge. Overall, it’s a sleek addition to the robot vacuum market.

We even have a separate machine to clean the carpets between test runs so one result won't influence the next.

Our testers called it “cute” and "convenient" with its retractable cord and place to clip the wand, though one wished that it also had an easy way to wrap the hose for even neater storage.

What sets this robot vacuum apart from the rest of the iRobot range is its ‘Dirt Detective’ feature, which means it automatically cleans the dirtiest rooms first and learns your cleaning habits, so it can make personalised suggestions to improve your routine.

Not all robovacs can handle the Em excesso challenge posed by lots of pet hair, but one that really impressed on this front was the Dreame L40 Ultra. This bot was put through its paces in a home filled with furry, four-legged friends, and really rose to the occasion.

We also liked that it has built-in LED lights so it can keep working when the house is dark, finding its way and dealing with the mess. Plus, there's a 'do not disturb' mode for quieter cleaning.

This is its first model (with several more coming soon) and it put in a stand-out performance, cleaning an entire room and picking up almost all the mess our testers laid in less than 15 minutes.

If you have shedding pets and carpet, look for models with higher suction power (5,000Pa or ideally more), and a boost/Em excesso suction mode option. Models with rubbery brushrolls are also typically good at gripping hair.

If none of the robot vacuums above take your fancy, here are some other models worth considering. These robovacs all scored Top 3 Automatic Vacuum Cleaners highly on test, but just didn't quite make our main guide.

Most robovacs fling large debris about the room rather than vacuuming it up, so this is very impressive. Another area where many robovacs fail is on cleaning around the edges and into the corners of rooms. Again, the Freo X Ultra shines here: the side brushes get right up to the edges of rooms.

However, I think it's fair to assume you'll need to manually empty it more than you would a traditional, self-empty robovac, given dock dustbins tend to hold 2.5L or 3L of dirt.

✅ Your priority is mopping: The star of the show here is the innovative and effective roller mop, which continuously siphons dirty water off the mop pad and adds fresh water as it cleans.

That might not be an issue if you're cleaning on one floor as the bot will just return to its dock to recharge as required, but it becomes more annoying if you're using it on multiple floors.

The mopping tank is small, so you’ll need to refill it with detergent fairly frequently if you use it routinely. The app lets you reduce the amount of water being used, to help extend the mopping function further between refills.
